Jazz After Dark can be found in full swing every Wednesday night between the hours of 7 pm and 10 pm and for visitors to Kingston it can be a music filled entry way into the city. There is no cover charge and all are invited to bask in the soothing melodies of the live band which includes a pianist, bassist, drummer, trombonist, and singer. There is no need to be overly concerned about attire as Jazz After Dark is not a fussy affair, although it is recommended that you ditch the flip flops. The band is coordinated by the lead pianist, Dennis Rushton, who is well respected within Jamaican musical circles.
In fact, this jazz affair is impressive because of the high calibre of musicians who deliver performances of authentic Jamaican jazz music. Singer/trombonist Everton Pessoa has a big talent that moves the audience, so that when he pulls out the popular hits, everyone is bopping their heads and tapping their feet. A few ladies even get serenaded. The band’s repertoire boasts international as well as local songs, and patrons seem very appreciative of the composition of Jamaican songs that are “jazzed up”.
Jazz After Dark aims to take attendees on an enchanting musical journey. Marketing Manager, Matthew Hann, says he wants patrons to experience “the smooth feeling that is jazz”. The event is meant to provide an alternative to the usual bar scene with the noisy chatter and racket. It is recommended that jazz loving visitors to Kingston who are here for the summer put Jazz After Dark on their list of activities to explore. If you’re not going to be here for the summer, you needn’t be disheartened: early indications are that the event’s popularity is going to propel it well beyond August 2017.
