KINGSTON JAMAICA TRAVEL, THE KINGSTON EXPERTS

The Healing - A Benefit Concert

Picture
Denver "Feluke" Smith is a well known Jamaican musician. Trained at Alpha, he is a gifted percussionist and said to be a hardworking talent. He is also battling for his life.

Feluke is fighting Stage 4 Colon Cancer. Funds have already been raised for his treatment, which is to take place in Mexico, through a GoFundMe campaign. On Sunday, September 24 there will be a benefit concert with some musical heavy hitters to raise the USD40,000 required for treatment, airfare, and accommodations while in Mexico. The line up includes Kymani Marley, Freddie Mcgregor, Queen Ifrica, Tony Rebel, and others.

The concert is on a Sunday, starts at 6 pm and therefore has all the hallmarks of being a "big people ting", for a more mature crowd. Music, culture, and supporting a worthy cause. There are few better ways to spend JMD1,500 and a Sunday evening.

Date: Sep 24, 2017
Cost: Regular tickets - JMD1,500 pre sold, JMD2,000 at the gate; VIP - JMD2,000 pre sold, JMD2,500 at the gate
Ticket Outlets:  Big Yard Studios, Bramwell's Texaco in Liguanea (at the corner of Hope and Old Hope roads), Rubis Gas Station in Half-Way Tree (beside Holy Childhood), SR Music at 11 1/2 Ardenne Road, and Avery's Beauty Concept at 111B Molynes Road, Mikie Bennett of Grafton Studio

Imagine a place where one can enjoy the cool, cool breeze of the hills, a breath-taking view of the city, and the unforgettable sounds of authentic, classic roots, rockers, reggae and dub music.  Imagine a place that has such a natural vibe that you will wish to steal a piece of it and take it home with you. This place exists and it’s Kingston Dub Club on a Sunday night. To get there requires a sound vehicle and a capable driver to manoeuvre the narrow winding roads, and JMD500. To truly enjoy it requires an appreciation of or a curiousity about Jamaican culture and a taste for reggae music.

The moment you step through the gates of this hidden, elevated slice of Jamaican culture, Dub Club transports you into a world of Rastafari Livity. Several steps down will take you into the heart of the music pulsating open-air club that seems to heave in tandem with its own beat. If you’re out of breath after taking the steps to get to the club, you can refresh yourself with natural juices such as june-plum and soursop, or choose from a list of alcoholic beverages, all at affordable prices. To eat, you can try the kitchen’s tasty ital soup, tuna melts, assorted wraps, and Jamaican pastries which include gizzada and grater cake. There is comfortable seating to relax and enjoy the atmosphere, or you can dance the night away on the dance floor located right next to the DJ booth.

Summer Jazz in the City

The Regency Bar and Lounge is known among locals as a prime spot for fun and enjoyment. Situated on the outskirts of New Kingston, this upscale location combines a sophisticated atmosphere with cozy environs and scrumptious meals, perfect for social gatherings and business meetings. Since 2013 the bar has been a part of the offering of the Terra Nova Hotel and Suites, a popular Kingston hotel whose colonial architecture speaks to a long history. Since the start of summer 2017, the lounge, already widely known as a venue for popular parties and events, has hosted the Jazz After Dark Series.

Jazz After Dark can be found in full swing every Wednesday night between the hours of 7 pm and 10 pm and for visitors to Kingston it can be a music filled entry way into the city. There is no cover charge and all are invited to bask in the soothing melodies of the live band which includes a pianist, bassist, drummer, trombonist, and singer. There is no need to be overly concerned about attire as Jazz After Dark is not a fussy affair, although it is recommended that you ditch the flip flops. The band is coordinated by the lead pianist, Dennis Rushton, who is well respected within Jamaican musical circles.
In fact, this jazz affair is impressive because of the high calibre of musicians who deliver performances of authentic Jamaican jazz music. Singer/trombonist Everton Pessoa has a big talent that moves the audience, so that when he pulls out the popular hits, everyone is bopping their heads and tapping their feet. A few ladies even get serenaded. The band’s repertoire boasts international as well as local songs, and patrons seem very appreciative of the composition of Jamaican songs that are “jazzed up”.

It is interesting to note that although the music echoes throughout the space, it is not overbearing. Persons can still socialize while the music is being played and are also welcome to sip and eat from the bar while enjoying the music. The drink and food menu boasts premium liquor, local and international cuisine, and to serve you there are immaculately dressed waiters on hand to see to your every beck and call.

Jazz After Dark aims to take attendees on an enchanting musical journey. Marketing Manager, Matthew Hann, says he wants patrons to experience “the smooth feeling that is jazz”. The event is meant to provide an alternative to the usual bar scene with the noisy chatter and racket. It is recommended that jazz loving visitors to Kingston who are here for the summer put Jazz After Dark on their list of activities to explore. If you’re not going to be here for the summer, you needn’t be disheartened: early indications are that the event’s popularity is going to propel it well beyond August 2017.

Admittedly this tour is not for everyone.

The tour is crafted with a specific traveler in mind. It is not for those who want to keep their distance, it is for those who wish to be immersed in the local culture. It is not for those who will falter in the heat. It is for those who understand that in the city temperatures can climb above 35 degrees Celsius in the summer months and who love that. It is for those who wish to travel like the ordinary Jamaican. It is for those who like adventure, busy streets, bright colours, Jamaican food, and new experiences.

It's free.

It's offered each Thursday.

It's organized by Jamaica Cultural Enterprises and the tour guide is Karen Hutchinson.

Space is limited to 5 but the tour takes place even if there's only person.

It's free. Check it out.

Each last Tuesday of the month Poetry Society of Jamaica holds a fellowship meeting. Usually member poets present their works and there is often a special guest. On June 28 the special guest will be Tribe Sankofa.
"Tribe Sankofa is a 14-member performing arts collective comprising a fresh, eclectic cadre of multi-talented performers who combine their artistry to add an exciting, new dimension to the performing arts landscape in Jamaica and the world.

"Their niche is borrowed and original spoken word/poetry, and soulful song-styling uniquely blended with other visual and performing arts, and though a relatively new group, their repertoire stands as wide and varied."

The event is scheduled to start at 730 pm at the Edna Manley College of the Visual and Performing Arts and is free.
